On July 14, 2021, the chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate visited the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist of the Russian Church Outside Russia in Washington, USA. This parish was founded in September 1949 by St. John of Shanghai the Wonderworker.

At the church entrance, His Eminence Hilarion was welcomed by Archpriest Victor Potapov, who had been in charge of the church as its rector for four decades now. The archpastor said he was glad to visit the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist once again and mentioned the divine service he had the occasion to celebrate in it in 2017.

During their talk, the rector informed the DECR chairman about the youth, educational and pastoral work at the parish.

Metropolitan Hilarion noted Father Victor’s participation in the process of preparations for the restoration of canonical unity between the Moscow Patriarchate and the Russian Church Outside Russia in 2007 and the importance of his missionary work that had begun as far back as in the 70th when the priest anchored the Voice of America radio program.

In memory of the meeting, Metropolitan Hilarion presented Father Victor with his books Liturgy and The Gospel According to Dostoyevsky.
